Rose McKinney-James

Rose McKinney-James is a nationally recognized clean energy and sustainability advocate, small business leader, and independent corporate director. She has demonstrated a long-term commitment to public service, corporate governance, and non-profit volunteerism. She is the former President and CEO for the Corporation for Solar Technology and Renewable Resources, (CSTRR), and a former Commissioner with the Nevada Public Service Commission. She served as Nevada’s first Director of the Department of Business and Industry where she established a culture of transparency while promoting a range of public private partnerships.

McKinney-James is currently the Managing Principal of Energy Works LLC and McKinney-James & Associates bringing over two decades of experience in advocacy in legislative and utility regulatory proceedings relative to renewable and clean energy policy and community and stakeholder outreach in Nevada and the U.S. Her firms provide business-consulting services and strategic advocacy in the areas of public affairs, energy policy, economic diversification, and sustainable development. She currently represents a range of public and private entities. She assists her clients by curating strategic plans and initiatives designed to be executed utilizing solutions that address their unique circumstances and demands. Building strategic partnerships with her clients has provided her a unique opportunity to leverage and advance her extensive knowledge and experience as a business, corporate, and community leader. As a result, her consulting practice has evolved, creating a broader focus on community corporate social responsibility, and equity issues.

Rose has helped to shape much of the energy policy framework in place in the state of Nevada. Working with a diverse group of advocates, McKinney-James spearheaded the effort to facilitate the passage of the first Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) in Nevada. This was the beginning of many successful collaborations resulting in significant clean energy policy advancement in the state.

McKinney-James serves on the Board of Directors for MGM Resorts International, Ioneer, Toyota Financial Savings Bank, Pacific Premier Bancorp and NACD PSW. She is a member of the Executive Leadership Council and recently completed her service on the Boards of ACORE and the US Energy Foundation where she served on the Executive Committee as the former Board Chair. She has also served as Board Chair for Nevada Partners and the American Association for Blacks in Energy (AABE). She currently serves on the Advisory Board for the Nevada Clean Energy Fund and the PG & E Sustainability Council.

Ms. McKinney-James joins four of her closest industry colleagues as the Co-Author of "The Energy Within Us" where they provide insights based on their collective and unique personal journeys in the energy profession.

Rose is the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions to include the Lifetime Achievement Award for the Clark County Public Education Foundation and the Women's Chamber of Commerce. She has been recognized by the US Small Business Administration as Small Business Advocate of the Year and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nevada Conservation League. She is the recipient of the inaugural GreenBiz Verge VANGUARD Award and the DirectWomen Sandra Day O'Connor Award for Board Excellence. In 2021, McKinney-James was named to the NACD Director 100 and is listed in the Black Enterprise Registry of Black Corporate Directors, and the SAVOY Magazine Power 300 among the most influential African American corporate Directors. She was recently honored as one of 100 Black Corporate Directors making a difference included in the 2024 Board Prospects Black History Month publication.

A native of Detroit, Michigan, Ms. McKinney-James is a graduate of the Antioch School of Law in Washington D.C., and received her BA from Olivet College in Olivet, Michigan.
